We are currently conducting drives in the Chicago area for Steve Pappas, a popular basketball coach. A major drive will be held at the National Greek Basketball Tournament in Oak Park, IL on Saturday and Sunday, April 1 and 2. Please log onto the link (www.bonemarrowtest.com) to find the exact location and hours of the drive.
If you are not available during those times, please e-mail the Registry and we can arrange to have you go to a doctor in the Chicago area to be tested.
In 2005 the Ahepa Bone Marrow Donor Registry completed 15 donor drives that added 1,364 persons to our database. We now have almost 8000 active donors. In 2004 we had a total of 52 requests for further testing from our database. In 2005 we had 111 requests. We ARE providing help to those afflicted with leukemia.
In 2005 drives were held at the YAL Conference in Rosemont, IL, St. John’s Cathedral, Tenafly, NJ, Fordham University, Bronx, NY, Ss. Upcoming Drives: In April we will be at St. Mark’s in Boca Raton, FL
and at Oak Park, IL
Kit Testing: If you wish to be tested by receiving a kit at home please
download the
consent form
(consent/medical history
form), complete both pages and send it to the address for the Donor Activity
Headquarters at 12 Lexington Drive, Livingston, NJ 07039. We must ask that
you send a check made out to the Ahepa BMDR in the amount of $70 to receive a
kit.
After you are tested and we receive your results, we will reimburse you whatever portion of that fee that you ask. We regret that we have to ask for the “upfront” money, but, some people never bother to be tested after receiving the kit and the Registry is then obligated to pay for that kit. We hope that you would permit us to keep the $70 to pay for other testing, however, we WILL refund all of it if you wish.
Transplant News: Two of the three Chicago area young people for whom we have been actively trying to find a match have passed away. Our 13 year old from Pennsylvania has also died, his transplant was not successful. May their memory be eternal.
Our little 9 year old from Hempstead just received her second transplant and this time things appear to be going well.
Please advise all of your friends, children, and grandchildren etc. to donate the cord blood from the birth of any child to a “cord bank.” This is normally discarded, but it is the richest source of stem cells that can be programmed to help many illnesses. Please ask your doctor for information as to where this cord blood can be donated. A kit will be sent to you by the center chosen for the delivery of the cord blood.
The probability of finding an allogeneic match is 20,000 to 1. We have over 7500 persons in our database. It is essential that we enlarge this pool of prospective donors. Please help us fund donor drives by sending your Chapter, or personal donation to:

Donations can also be made In Memory Of, or, In Living Tribute to a friend or relative.

This is a group of dynamic young Greek adults in Chicago who are committed
to finding a match for patients in need of a transplant.
Dr. Peter Gallas was stricken with acute myelogenous leukemia in February 1987. He had received his MD degree from Wayne State University in Michigan, and was a resident in anesthesiology at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Peter’s entire family, both in the United States and in Greece was tested, but none of them was compatible as a bone marrow donor. A donor among the general public, especially of Greek descent, had to be found. Dr. Peter Paulus of Ocala, FL volunteered to head up an Ahepa Committee to find a donor. The Committee began a nationwide campaign for funds and for donors. A match for Peter was never found and he eventually died from the disease. But his legacy was the Ahepa Bone Marrow Donor Registry, a dedicated group of volunteers whose new knowledge and experience is an invaluable source of assistance to the Greek people who are faced with fighting this disease.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Ahepa Bone
Marrow Donor Registry is to add persons of Mediterranean descent into our
database of prospective donors. The best chance for a leukemia patient is
from a family member. Secondly, from relatives, and then from their ethnic
group.
The chances of finding an unrelated (allogeneic) match are 20,000 to 1. We
must add to our database so that any Greek patient has a realistic chance of
finding a match.
